Rest for the People of God

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God - Hebrews 4:9

I was recently reading this passage and was filled with much joy. Amidst the 377 emails in my work inbox (each representing a task I needed to work on) , the increasing number of to-dos of everyday life, and serving at my local church, this is a welcome reminder.

For every believer, there is God-given work, and I look forward to it. There is great satisfaction found here. However, it can be tiring for us humans who need rest. The fact is, we cannot survive without stopping to eat or sleep. From time to time, we even arrange for "retreats" so that we can be ready to once again join the daily "race to the finish". Rest is God's gift--both a reminder of our dependency on God and also a means to recharge and be able to do more work the next day.

"Ah, Christian," Spurgeon writes, "the hot day of weariness does not last forever. The sun is nearing the horizon; it shall rise again with a brighter day than you have ever seen upon a land where they serve God day and night, and yet rest from their labors" (from Morning and Evening in ESV).

One more reason to look forward to heaven.
