Occupied with Joy

I am so amazed how alive God's Word is. There is always a jewel of truth that suddenly resonates in your heart every time you read it. Here's one that pleasantly surprised me. It felt like seeing an old friend and making a new one at the same time.

18Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment[g] in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. 19Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil--this is the gift of God. 20For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.

Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (emphasis mine)

Initial observations include that God has given us gifts on this earth to enjoy - food, work, wealth, possessions, and power. At first, this was confusing, because Solomon just finished talking about the vanity and the fleeting nature of honor and riches gained on earth. Reading verse 20 bridges the gap between seeing the temporal items as vanity and finding enjoyment in them as gifts from God. Lasting joy is derived, not from the earth, but from the all-sufficient God!

When that Day comes
to recount my life's vocation
may I not say, "oh, this task and that," but
"I was occupied with the joy of Your salvation".

P.S. Thanks Stacey, for pointing this verse out. :)
